But on trips to California, in his office in Washington and over the phone, Obama has also been talking with leaders of all the major artificial intelligence companies — including Sam Altman of OpenAI, as well as executives at Google and Anthropic — and a range of outside experts and academics along with informal advisers, including Jason Goldman, the former Twitter executive who ran his Office of Digital Strategy, according to people familiar with the conversations.
The former president isn’t alone: Democratic leaders across the spectrum, from former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan to former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, are also demanding more from a coalescing field they say so far has generally been more reactive than meeting the moment. But none of them — including Obama — can agree yet quite what the plan should be, and some 2028 hopefuls are worried about getting on the wrong side of the AI industry’s massive campaign spending.
